- Meta
-
- A Mini Cassette Album
- By Graeme Coleman
-
- A Review by Kevan R.Craft
-
-
- MIDICraft Magazine readers will be familiar with Graeme's music as some of
- his module music has been featured on quite a few previous issues..
-
- Graeme wrote to me a while ago and mentioned that he was proposing to
- produce a Cassette Album and would be making this available to other
- Amiga musicians though the MIDICraft Magazine forum. As Graeme has
- been such a good contributor I offered to review his cassette so here we
- go..
-
- Basically, Meta is a 30 minute cassette (15 mins each side) and
- contains 6 tracks of original compositions in total (3 on Side A and 3 on
- Side B). Graeme has been composing music on the Amiga computer way back
- since the days of the Amiga 500 and the excellent quality of his music
- modules is reflected here in Meta which has been produced using the Amiga
- 1200, MED and OctaMED V5, A Roland D-10 and BOSSDS Module synths, sampling
- and mastered onto cassette tape.. Don't be misled by the small amount of
- equipment used however, the music contained on Meta is actually very
- professional, the tracks are well constructed and signify a sense of
- maturity in his marvellous compositions.
-
- Side A
-
- Meta
-
- Meta is the opening track on the mini Album cassette and a good choice
- too as this piece begins with a brief selection of sampled vocals
- accompanied with some rich sounding synth instruments which gradually
- merge and builds into a confident yet catchy rhythm structure accompanying
- some mean bass synth work by Graeme. The thing I like about Graeme's
- music, is his uncanny ability to construct really catchy drum
- patterns which compliment his overall compositions. In Meta we are
- presented with a Tour de Force of a number containing an orchestrated
- synth landscape with excellent drumming and an understated piano/synth
- melody which counterpoints the dynamic synth bass and drums so well. The
- climax of this track contains a series of sampled voices like broadcast
- announcers but montaged with the beautiful fading synthersizer
- landscape.... Overall, Meta is both catchy and possess a neat chord
- structure, together with a haunting melody which blend together really
- well..

-
- Blue Salamanda
-
- Next is Blue Salamanda which opens with a soft reverse cymbal, a
- series of polyphonic pad voices, a haunting synth flute type instrument
- then the drum and percussion emerge with a deep bass all helping to
- create a heavenly synth landscape which one could easily liken to the
- picture on Meta's Cassette cover - ASTRAL is definitely the word here!
- Blue Salamanda is a relatively short composition which successfully
- manages to encompass both major and flat keys in a descending sequence
- and as such communicates a quiet sadness in this emotional piece.
- Indeed, I was reminded of the End Title music employed in much quality
- Film and T.V. dramas and Blue Salamanda wouldn't be out of place if used
- in this area of media.. The clever use of space within the composition is
- marked only by the choice of instrumentation in this arrangement
- which provide the listener with a deep and meaningful understanding to a
- universe of Astral synthesizer landscapes..
-
-
- Two Minutes
-
- The final track on side A of the Cassette, Two Minutes opens with a
- synth arpeggio melody sequence and a solo flute carefully structured and
- balanced in the background together with an occasional space sounding
- sample slowly weaving in and out of the stereo production. Analogue
- sounding strings emerge caressing the theme, already established by the
- synth pad, and when the drums enter we're away on a foot-tapping synth-
- Folk-ballad which is a beautiful and evocative piece of music in the New
- Age tradition. My only criticism here is the running time of Two Minutes
- because when I hear a composition and it moves me, I always like to hear
- as much of it as possible and just when I was getting into this piece it
- was finished much like a brief love affair. Some of the world's most
- successful composers have been presented with this dilemma, where they had
- composed a piece of music only to find that its completeness was at odds
- with its overall time length. Some academics call this kind of music a
- 'Tone Poem' but if the composer repeats the composition thereby producing
- the effect of doubling the running time of the peice then this would
- enhance these little gems even further.. However, despite the clear
- references to 'Tone Poems', Two Minutes stands up as a profound composition
- in its own right!

-
- Side B
-
- Voice Of Summer
-
- Starting in that fine Dance music tradition, with a clever intermittent
- piano sequence, Voice of Summer dives into a real thundering catchy dance
- beat of a number which wouldn't be out of place in the charts.. There's
- much to admire here in this piece with the clever use of softly
- stabbing strings which juxtaposition masterfully within the arrangement and
- the excellent synth melody is simply crying out for a girly singer -
- I really liked this track and seriously think you've got a hit here
- Graeme! Excellent!
-
-
- Legend
-
- Legend opens with a soft flute and a Gaelic rhythm of percussion and
- drums close to the traditional Scottish/Irish Folk genre as its
- structure. The clever use of synthesizer instrumentation, the complex
- multiple-drumming, deep bass, flute and bold analogue synth pad provide
- this track with an overall mythic quality - the very stuff of which
- legends are made! Moreover, one can appreciate the choice of title for
- Legend because this is indeed what this haunting piece is - a musical
- legend! Graeme should be congratulated for capturing so well an aspect
- of his cultural identity in this composition which reflects Centuries of
- Scotishness in every note. Bold, honest and true - Legend is a fine
- track, its catchy, possesses brilliant multiple drumming structures and
- pays homage to traditional Gaelic melodies in a new and very
- interesting way..
-
-
- White Waves
-
- The final track on the mini Album, White Waves is a modern dance track
- which immediately builds into a train at full speed never faltering from
- its tracks at any time! The haunting use of synths and bass produces a
- tightly weaved landscape juxtapositioned to the rapid drum and
- percussion structure. The occasional use of a layered synth wave effect
- enhances the overall composition and probably led to naming the title of
- this track. A good choice of track to end the mini album with and one
- which compliments the Meta project..
-
- As a conclusion, Meta is a fine collection of Graeme Coleman's
- compositional and performance skills using synthesizers, MED, OctaMED and
- the occasional nod to sampling. Don't be fooled by the music being mastered
- on to tape because the quality is really very good! The music
- contained on Meta is occasionally haunting and occasionally lyrical with
- nice melodic flair and there's equally much to be admired for the diverse
- choice of drumming styles which compliment each composition so well! If
- you can achieve all this with a small home set up and limited budget then
- you must be doing something right! With Meta, Graeme Coleman has
- definitely got it right! If you're interested in producing a
- cassette containing your own compositions then I would recommend
- listening to this tape just to hear what can be achieved and if you are
- able to emulate the efforts here then you'll be onto a winner! Well
- done Graeme, a great mini album by a great Amiga musician!
-
- Meta is available to other Amiga music enthusiasts and those interested
- are directed to the ASCII Advert which provides all the relevant details
- and Graeme's snail-maile address so if you wish you can obtain your own
- personal copy of this excellent limited edition mini Album produced by
- Graeme Coleman using the Amiga 1200 and MIDI synthesizers..
